Niyaz musical group combines ancient poetry with 21st century musical interpretation

"The word niyaz, in both the Persian language of Farsi and the Indo-Pakistani language of Urdu, means 'yearning' -- and it was the diasporic yearning of three musicians that helped bring this group together. Their self-titled outing, Niyaz's first, seeks to revere the past and revel in the present, and it succeeds on both counts.

Niyaz presents traditional melodies and ancient Urdu/Farsi poetry, enhancing them with electronic flourishes and 21st century musical sensibilities. The result is a highly accessible, cross-cultural portrait of a region across centuries."
